What to expect from your first sailing lesson?
Forget the stuffy classroom. The moment you step aboard with AusSea Sailing School, you’re straight into the action. No slideshows here, no theory-heavy lectures, just real sailing from minute one.
That’s the whole philosophy of AusSea Sailing School here. There’s no better place to learn how to sail than out on the water. With your hands on the ropes, feeling the boat respond beneath you. At AusSea Sailing School, every lesson happens on a yacht on Kogarah Bay and Botany Bay. Calm, sheltered waters away from the chaos of Sydney Harbour, and widely regarded as the best spot in Sydney to learn to sail.
Hands-on from the very first minute
Your first session is the popular Try Sail experience, a fun two-hour introduction on Botany Bay and Kogarah Bay. You won’t be sitting on the sidelines watching instructor Marc van Dinther do all the work. You’ll be trimming sails, taking the helm, and learning to read the wind, using every sense to build genuine wind awareness from the get-go.
Marc has been introducing thousands of people to sailing since 2009. AusSea Sailing School’s approach is built entirely around safety-first, hands-on practice. You’ll pick up the right techniques for handling the boat and develop an instinct for how wind and sail work together. You’ll start building real boat handling skills. All while being actually out on the water, not stuck inside memorising diagrams.
What you’ll actually walk away with
By the end of your first sailing lesson, you’ll have a genuine feel for how a yacht moves, how to trim a sail, and how to stay safe aboard. It’s not about cramming theory. It’s about letting your body and senses do the learning, lesson after lesson, until sailing starts to feel instinctive.
And if you catch the bug (most people do), there’s a clear pathway waiting. From that first Try Sail, you can progress through the International Crew course (IYT Levels 1-5), building toward offshore sailing and even spinnaker racing. Keep going, and the International Bareboat Skipper pathway will get you qualified to charter yachts up to 80 feet, anywhere in the world.
Why Botany Bay makes all the difference
Learning on Botany Bay means you can focus purely on sailing, not dodging ferries, cargo ships and harbour traffic. It’s the ideal training ground to make mistakes, build confidence, and genuinely enjoy the process without the stress of a crowded waterway.
So if you’ve ever wondered what it’s really like to sail, your first lesson with AusSea Sailing School is the answer — no boring theory, just you, the wind, and a yacht ready to respond to your every move.
