AusSea crew love their racing

We are always keen to mix it with the boys of BBYC on Botany Bay, during J24 state or national championships in Gosford or Sydney Harbour and regatta’s in Cronulla.

Even though claiming first prize is great, our main goal is to have as much fun as we can and learn while we’re doing it.

Racing with one of our experienced instructors – all state or national champion in their respective classes – gives you the benefit of trying your hand at the various roles on board in a safe environment. So, in one race you might find yourself steady on the helm, while during the next one you could be bouncing up and down on the bow trying to tame the spinnaker. As you know, we like to keep things exiting and fun!

During the season we will compete in spinnaker races on Saturday and in twilight races on Friday. Anyone who has done the basic crewing and helming course can join us on Friday, but for the spinnaker races you need to have done the spinnaker/racing courses or have at least one year of spinnaker experience.

The twilight races on Friday start at 6 pm, while the gun for the start of Saturday races goes at 1.30 pm. The summer series are held over an Olympic triangle course and the occasional sprint races consist of windward- leeward courses with two races per afternoon. The transit races take you around Botany Bay, with the start and finish in front of the Botany Bay Yacht Club.

Twilight races are held during Daylight Savings on Kogarah Bay and Georges River over various courses. They are very popular and AusSea Sailing School has had many wins in the past few years. Crews fill fast and we have limited spots available, so get in quick.

We sell the races in blocks of five, so you and the rest of the crew really get the chance to gel as a team. Please find the rates and the dates of the various races below.

This has proven to be a bestseller in the past summers. The twilight series is a perfect way to find out what all the noise is about. But be warned: racing is addictive! Like so many others before you might want to come back over and over again. During the twilights you’ll get the chance to be on the helm while the fleet is buzzing around you, waiting for the starting gun, and gybe and tack around the racing marks. It’s also a great way to learn more about the racing rules (STARBOARD!!!) and to sharpen your trimming and handling skills. Included: race and dive fees, cotton AusSea Sailing crew shirt, use of safety and race gear.

This package entitles you to race five times on one of our quality J24’s and it will give you a good understanding of what spinnaker racing in a fast paced, close environment is all about. You’ll get the chance to experience the various roles on a racing yacht – from bowman to helmsman.  Included: race and dive fees, cotton AusSea Sailing crew shirt, use of safety and race gear.

Now we’re getting really serious. This will give us the chance to mould a tough and well oiled racing machine. Not only will you come racing with us on 10 Saturdays, but we will also throw in two FREE twilight races, the AusSea Sailing crew kit (sailing gloves and dri-fit crew shirt, valued at $80). Included: race and dive fees, sailing gloves dri- fit AusSea Sailing crew shirt, two twilight races and use of race and safety gear.
